Ph. Eur.: Revised Chapter on Glass Containers
The European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) has published a significantly revised version of general chapter 3.2.1 Glass containers for pharmaceutical use in Pharmeuropa 37.3, marking the first major update since 2019 (Ph. Eur. Supplement 9.6).
Key changes include clearer explanations of tests A, B, and C used to define glass type and hydrolytic resistance – addressing frequent user questions. The section has been restructured, with added details on test purposes.
Another major update modernises the spectral transmission test for coloured glass containers. The method now considers wall thickness instead of container volume and closure, reflecting real-world data and improving consistency in light protection assessments.
The draft is open for public consultation until end of September 2025.
