EU: Environment Committee Comments on EU Regulation Regarding Critical Medicines

The Environment Committee of the European Parliament has issued its opinion on the proposed EU Regulation to strengthen the availability of critical medicines. Key recommendations include fast-track permitting, simplified environmental assessments, and support for strategic manufacturing projects to boost EU production capacity.

The Committee calls for better coordination among Member States and a balanced, data-driven approach to avoid disruptions caused by overlapping environmental and chemical legislation. High environmental standards should be upheld without compromising medicine availability.

Transparency is emphasised: all environmental and authorisation data should be accessible via a central online portal. Procedures must remain efficient and time-bound, avoiding unnecessary burdens. Rapid activation of strategic projects is supported, especially to address urgent shortages.
