Swissmedic Clarifies Requirements for QR Codes on Medicinal Product Packaging

Swissmedic has revised its guidance document “Mobile technologies” and added two new entries to the related questions and answers. The update follows an increasing number of queries regarding the details and placement of URLs, the positioning of QR codes and their captions.

The revised guidance now distinguishes more clearly between mandatory requirements and recommendations. Swissmedic clarifies that both the use of a URL and the addition of a caption to a QR code, such as “Medicinal product information”, are recommendations rather than mandatory requirements.

The two new questions and answers address the linking of QR codes to specific platforms used for the publication of medicinal product information.

The revised guidance and the additional questions and answers have been valid or available since 1 August 2026.
