EU: Strengthening Pharmaceutical Supply Chains and Global Health Resilience
The European Commission has published a new communication on reinforcing global health resilience, with a strong focus on resilient pharmaceutical supply chains, expanded manufacturing capacity, and security of supply for critical health products.
According to the Commission, geopolitical tensions, concentrated manufacturing sites, and supply chain disruptions are increasing vulnerabilities in the global healthcare sector. Vaccines, antibiotics, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are particularly affected by dependencies on a limited number of manufacturers and regions.
The EU therefore plans to support diversified supply chains and regional manufacturing capacities for medicines and other health products. The initiative also highlights the role of EU regulatory expertise, its high quality and safety standards, and cooperation with international authorities. Planned measures include support for technology transfer, regulatory collaboration, and local manufacturing initiatives in partner countries.
The overall goal is to strengthen both Europe’s strategic autonomy and global supply security.
