EU: Parliament Approves Regulation Proposal on Critical Medicines
The European Parliament has approved regulatory measures aimed at strengthening the availability and supply of critical medicines in the EU. By a large majority, Members of the European Parliament backed efforts to reduce dependency on third countries and reinforce EU-based pharmaceutical manufacturing and supply chains.
Key elements include the establishment of strategic manufacturing projects within the EU, prioritised public funding, procurement rules favouring EU-based production, and improved coordination of national medicine stockpiles to better prevent and manage shortages.
The vote follows a regulation proposal presented by the European Commission in March 2025 (we reported). Next, negotiations with EU Member States will begin to define the final regulatory framework.
